Conflict and Resolution in Archaeology
University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada
November 8th to 11th
Call for Presentation Abstracts- DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 9 2012

The 2012 Chacmool Conference will not be accepting abstracts or session topics at this time.

The 45th Annual Chacmool Conference is hosted by the Chacmool Archaeological Association and the Department of Archaeology, University of Calgary.

The Chacmool Conference this year is focused on the study of conflict, not only with its ties to all aspects of human endeavour, but also with its perception in archaeological theory today. Our theme embraces conflict and resolution in all its forms, including warfare, terrorism, mass disasters, engendered warfare, conflicting ideologies and archaeological paradigms, to name only a few. Conflict may or may not be a natural state for humanity but it is nonetheless present in almost every culture, past and present, and is a necessary subject of study in archaeology. Through an understanding of past conflicts we can better understand ourselves and the conflicts we engage in today.

Possible Session Topics Include:
  • Conflict and the Evolution of Civilization
  • Bioanthropology and Past Conflicts
  • Engendered Warfare
  • Theoretical Confrontations in Archaeology
  • The Changing Technologies of Warfare
  • Archaeology in Warzones
  • Warfare in Ancient Imagery
  • Early Hominid Warfare
Please Note: these are only suggested topics and other themes will be considered. Abstracts of approximately 150 words should be submitted via the Abstract Submission Form
