Application Policies and Procedures

Submitted by dfto on Tue, 07/24/2007 - 10:18.

Our program begins on September 1st and students applying for admission to the program should ensure that all documentation is submitted to the Department of Archaeology prior to the January 15th deadline. This is particularly essential if applying for scholarships. Applications cannot be considered until all documentation is received.

The University of Calgary requires that applicants use the online application process. The On-line Application is available at: https://www.gradapplication.ucalgary.ca/account/instructions.asp

Applicants are responsible for following the requirements and submitting all required documentation listed on this web site. In cases where a university or college will not issue official transcripts or references to the student, they can be submitted directly to the Department of Archaeology by the issuing institution before January 15th.

Documentation Required:

  1. A cheque for the $100 application fee (made out to the University of Calgary) for Canadian students, $130 for international students. Payment may also be made by Visa or Mastercard. Credit card information (credit card number, expiry date and name as shown on card) can be submitted on-line.
  2. Two reference forms (in sealed envelopes with referee’s signature across the flap).

  3. Two copies of official transcripts from each University or college attended.

  4. A brief statement setting forth the candidate's purpose in applying for graduate study, the particular area of specialization within the major field, and any additional information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating preparation and fitness for graduate study at Calgary. The statement of intent can be submitted on line, or mailed with the other documentation.
  5. An example of written work, preferably a graded term paper. The written work sample can be submitted on line, or mailed with the other documentation.

  6. An up to date curriculum vitae (resume). This too can be either submitted on line or via hard copy with your other documentation.

Students from non-English speaking countries should, in addition,

  1. Ensure that their transcripts are accompanied by an official translation. Letters of reference should either be in English or should be accompanied by an official translation.
  2. Arrange to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and have the results transmitted to the Department. The Faculty of Graduate Studies requires a minimum score of at least 550 for the written test or 213 for the computer-based test before a student will be considered for admission.

Students applying for scholarships must submit both the application for admission and application for scholarship on-line by January 15th. The on-line application form for scholarships must also be filled out and is available at: Scholarship Application Form

Students applying for the Biological Anthropology Program, with Archaeology as their home department, should just go ahead and apply for an MA or PhD in Archaeology, but indicate their intended program of study in their letter of intent.
