It is the policy of the Archaeology department to guarantee incoming MA and PhD students funding. MA students are guaranteed two units of funding in each of the first two years of program, and PhD students are guaranteed two units of funding in each of the first four years of program. These units may include scholarships and major awards.  Minimum guaranteed yearly amounts are $15,000 for MA students and $20,000 for PhD students.

The Department offers two types of awards: Graduate Assistantships (Teaching) and Graduate Research Scholarships. As all regular, full-time students (or those applying for entry as regular, full-time students) are eligible and are automatically considered for these awards, a separate application is not required.

The Graduate Assistantship (Teaching) - GAT - award requires 12 hours of service per week. The Graduate Research Scholarship - GRS - is directly related to the individual student's program and no service is required. Awards are given September through December; January through April; and May through August. The value of the awards (per term) for the 2011/2012 academic year are:

Teaching Assistantships - $7,960

Graduate Research Scholarships - $7,000

Most of the scholarships and fellowships available to graduate students are awarded through the Scholarships Committee of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. A full list of scholarships and eligibility requirements are listed in the STUDENT AWARDS MANAGEMENT DATABASE on the Faculty of Graduate Studies website: https://pr1web.ucalgary.ca/UofC_FGSA/public/publichome.aspx

Students applying for the Open Scholarship competition should carefully read the information contained on the on-line scholarship application form. Ensure that a research or study proposal is attached.

Awards for the May through August period are made only in exceptional circumstances. Students who receive a scholarship are not eligible for a full departmental graduate award. However, at the discretion of the Department, partial departmental funding may be offered to scholarship holders.
