Research Interests

Through a landscape approach, my research will refine the inland archaeological potential model for Haida Gwaii / the Queen Charlotte Islands, BC.

Most published archaeological research for Haida Gwaii has focused on coastal sites associated with winter villages and therefore the research I am doing is filling an important gap in the archaeological record for this archipelago. I use remote sensing, spatial analysis in a Geographic Information System (GIS), archival maps, the British Columbia Provincial Archaeological site database, ethnography, the Haida language / xaad kil, and my extensive fieldwork background in this area to consider where ancient trails and other inland site types may be found.

I believe in transparent approaches to research and welcome input from all sources; from the local community and professional base of Haida Gwaii, to my research colleagues here at the University of Calgary, and my alma mater, Simon Fraser University. As a resident of Haida Gwaii for 21 years, I understand the need for local, publically available information on archaeological study and therefore the products of my research include community and conference presentations, and creating educational opportunities for youth.
