With funding from National Geographic/Waitt program, the University of Calgary under the direction of Dr. Geoffrey McCafferty and in collaboration with Mi Museo and the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Nicaragua will conduct archaeological investigations on Zapatera Island at the site of Sonzapote. Sonzapote is best known for monumental statuary recorded by Carl Bovallius (1886) and later removed to the San Francisco museum in Granada city. Fieldwork will take place in July and August.
